In response to Tal up above - Modern Music is worth celebrating because there tend to be more than 2 'great' British bands per decade, which was not the case before the 1980's.

I'm 18, and I love Raising Sand to bits. But then, I'm American, so maybe I don't count.

I will say, though, that if you think Raising Sand is too "easy listening," you should really check out some videos from the tour.

Yes, Untrue is an amazing album, but that generally doesn't have anything to do with why it will win (I would put a lot of money on it).

1. It's an emerging genre
2. It's trendy without being mainstream
3. It's critically acclaimed but not all that well known (Mercury generally don't know all that much about music but always want to appear as if they know more then the average listener)
4. It's the most 'urban' of all the nominees (yes this matters)
5. No one knows who Burial is, so it's all a bit 'Banksy' (Mercury like their gimmicks)
6. The only way Mercury would give Radiohead this award now would be as a consolation prize, otherwise it would cheapen the previous awards that Radiohead lost out on (In Rainbows is arguably the weakest of their 4 nominated albums).

But yes, Untrue is an amazing album would be a deserving winner, but I don't think it'll win for the right reasons (no one ever does!).

p.s. I'd like Elbow to win it, as well.

"Find me a champion of the album who is under 25, that’s my challenge to you."
I'd like to take up that challenge and refer you to the fanboard of both Robert Plant and Alison Krauss where you will find that there is lots of love for Raising sand amongst the under 25 fans. In fact maybe more so than under the older ( long time) fans of either artist. ;D
Though I love the album I am not under 25 myself but I do have to agree with you in failing to understand what that album is doing in this particular "competition" .
And here is my question..who would want to celebrate "modern British music" ?

A very interesting article. If Untrue is anywhere near as good as you claim, I can only support your argument. For those who don't know, I am a Radiohead obsessive.

I reckon your right about TNPS, they truly are something special.

First evidence of time travel from the future?

I think so.
