It’s The New Thing

Recently there has been a copious amount of new and amazing remixes (although 1 disappointing one).

Firstly, I bring you the long awaited……… MOTHERFUCKING JUSTICE REMIX OF KLAXONS. After the failed attempt at a remix of It’s Not Over, the suave Parisian electro duo tried their hand at remixing the tale of the stars, As Above, So Below. The remix is way lighter in comparison to the original with only the vocals coming from the original track, broken up synths and bass lines compliment the vocals amazingly well, making the remix, well: amazing.

Secondly, the remix of It’s Not Over by Brondski, this previously unreleased remix closes off Klaxons Bugged Out Mix CD compiled and mixed by Jamie Reynolds. The remix isolates the guitar chords from the track adding some extra delay before being joined by a staccato beat and James Righton’s vocals. The remix soon descends into spacey echoes of guitar until an elongated and distorted version of the main riff of It’s Not Over fades in.

Next are the two remixes of Tonto by Battles off the Tonto+ EP due out now on Warp. When the remix by minimal electro artist The Field was announced I was so excited but the remix is a real let down. The main loop he chooses as the foundation to the remix is severely grating and the track is a lot more repetitive than tracks on his genius album From Here We Go Sublime. However Four Tet has a much better stab at remixing Tonto, recycling the guitar riff and the digitized vocals, even revealing a lyric saying “You’ll feel better” (at least I think that is what it says).

Remixing gods Soulwax have also released a 2 disc collection of their remixes from over the years. The first disc is a collection of all the remixes on their own, whereas the second disc sees all the remixes mixed together by 2 Many DJs. My pick of the bunch is the blaring 7 minute remix of Justice’s Phantom Part II.

Also remixed, but omitted from the remix collection is Soulwax‘s remix of Get Innocuous by LCD Soundsystem. The remix features on LCD’s upcoming single Someone Great (my personal favourite off Sound of Silver). The remix is a solid pulsating one with a warped rework of the song’s riff.

I’m just going to come right out and say it: I am a massive Bloc Party fan, I’m not going to lie. But, this new song has left me second guessing them completely. The song is not THAT bad, however the vocal effect at the beginning is like a Hi-5 to Britney Spears and Cher, what the fuck. Some intensity that was lacking on A Weekend In The City is back in the vocals, but as for Matt Tong’s drumming, well let’s just say he must have been ill when they recorded this song. It’s an alright little dancey track, nothing special, and they do have a Mircokorg! But still for me, the saddest thing is Matt’s drumming, non-existent on the studio recording and on the Conan O’Brien performance he looks like the world’s most bored person. Just watch Bloc Party’s first appearance of Jools Holland and you will see the real Matt Tong and his intense drumming, not this mundane beat. Bloc Party have promised us a third record that will be like “old bloc, but with experience”. I pray that’s true, I really do.

Pete & The Pirates – Knots

I’m really a big fan of this song, I was a bit suspect of the band when they were on the cover of Artrocker a few weeks ago, mostly due to the bad name, but this song is a seriously good little burst of excellent indie pop.

Young Knives – Terra Firma

An amazing song from an amazing band, already written about the song HERE, and you can download the mp3 of it there too.

Battles – Tonto

One of the best bands of 2007, amazing single and once again, a truly amazing video. Another mammoth 7 minute epic from the NY quartet, with an awesome guitar part in the middle, Mirrored for album of the year anyone?
